Farewell My Friend

Several people have sent me e-mails and have left voice mails recently. I have even received a couple of rude follow-ups. My apologies for not getting back to you, I will try and do so this weekend.

I’ve said little about it, but this past Thursday, I laid to rest a Chesapeake that meant more to me than I can articulate. As my heart tries to mend from her loss, tomorrow, I will grieve again as I am reminded of our last moments together, when I go and pick up her ashes. I just haven’t had it in me to follow-up to emails, discuss puppies, plans, events etc… I’m sorry. No. I take that back. I’m not sorry.

Some of you will understand, some will not. Some will say, she lived a long life. True, she did. Some will say, she could have died from other things/or earlier in life. True, she could have. I am thankful, so very thankful for the 13 1/2 years I had with Jessie. And yet, 13 1/2 years were not nearly long enough.

Every day we wish our lives away, wanting the minutes, the days, the weeks, the months to be over. We complain about how time goes by so slow and, yet, I will argue that time goes by so fast. So very fast. Before we realize it time has slipped by. A year. 5 years.  13 1/2 years.  I was reminded that we are each given a limited amount of time to be on this earth and every day we get to choose how we are going to spend that time. Grab a leash. Take a walk – even in the rain or cold. Throw a ball. Give a treat. Snuggle on the couch. Take photos, there can never be too many photos. When our time is up, there are no tomorrows. No do-overs. No second chances. Spend what time you have wisely, embrace it – don’t wish it away.

They say letting our dogs go, when it’s time, is the kindest thing we can do for our companions. This may be true, but I say it’s the most unkind thing to our hearts.

Farewell, my sweet friend.

2014 National Chesapeake Show Speciality

Thought I’d give a little update from our recent time at the Chessie National Specialty.

Jesse – GCH** CoolWater’s The Tide Is High – made it through two cuts in the breed ring.

Patton – CH CoolWater’s Patton’s Destiny is Some Great Thing – placed in sweeps and made the first cut in a very competitive breed ring.

Fen – SHR CoolWater’s Roane Point BN, RN- picked up two new titles Beginners Novice Obedience (BN) and Rally Novice(RN). She also earned her first leg towards her Companion Dog title (CD). In conformation, Fen took 4th in a large class with many other nice Chesapeakes. This gave Fen the Versatility award – qualifying in three events.

All in all I couldn’t be prouder of our crew and the dogs who did their best to give us 100% each time we asked.

Patton

GCH CH* CoolWaters Patton’s Destiny Is Some Great Thing

Height: 24″ | Weight: 85 lbs | Color: Dark Red-Brown | Coat: Short, thick, very course
Patton.72Patton lives in Massachusetts with his owner, Todd.

Patton is a nice-looking boy with a wonderful easy-going temperament. He gets along well with other dogs, both male and female. Patton has many nice things about him, a beautiful topline, gorgeous coat, good substance, and short in loin. One of his strengths, however, is his strong movement which helped him garner his AKC Conformation title rather quickly.

Here are some of Patton’s successes:

  • Finished his Championship in 5 weekends, with 3 majors, at just under 10 months of age.
  • First weekend out after earning his Championship took Best of Breed over specials at just under a year of age.
  • At 15 months of age, he made the first cut for Best of Breed at the 2014 ACC National Show Specialty.
  • At 25 months of age, he was awarded a Group 4 placement at an AKC all-breed show.
  • At 27 months of age, he was awarded a Group 3 placement at an AKC all-breed show.
  • 2017 Westminister Kennel Club Award of Merit.
  • Currently has 3 of 4 passes for his HRC title

Fen

SHR CoolWater's Roane Point

Size: 22″| Weight: 60 lbs.| Color: Medium Red-Brown| Coat: Very thick with ample texture

Fen lives in Georgia with her owner, Laurea Griggs.

Fen is very much like her grandmother, Morgan, in that she’s a very happy-go-lucky girl with an amazing temperament. She has never meet a stranger and she’s very out-going and friendly. She gets along well with other dogs both male and female.

Fen is an athletic and versatile girl with great trainability. She’s very birdy, a great marker with good drive and control. She’s quiet and steady at the line and in the blind. She’s a great companion as well – friendly and outgoing wtih a nice ‘off-switch’, relaxed and easy going in the house. Fen is currently training for her Senior and Seasoned titles. She’s been on ducks, quail, chukkars and pheasant.

Conformationally, Fen is sound and balanced. She finished her AKC Conformation Championship quickly and easily with 4 major wins.

Fen also has titles in hunt tests, obedience, rally, barn hunt and will be competing in agility soon. Here are a few of Fen’s accomplishments thus far:

        • Won the 4-6 month old puppy stakes at the 2013 National Field Trial Specialty.
        • Earned her UKC Started Retriever title, by going 4 for 4, at 9 months of age.
        • Earned her Junior Hunter title at 17 months of age.
        • Earned her Therapy Dog Title (THD)
        • Earned her IABCA (International) conformation title in one weekend.
        • Earned her AKC conformation championship with 4 majors at 15 months of age.
        • Earned qualifying legs towards her Beginners Novice Obedience (BN) title each time she entered.
        • Earned qualifying legs towards her Rally Novice (RN) title each time she entered.
        • Earned qualifying legs towards her CD title each time she entered.
        • Took 4th in a very competitive 12-18 mos. class a the 2014 American Chesapeake National Show Specialty.
        • Earned qualifying legs towards her Rally Advanced (RA) title each time she entered.
        • Earned qualifying legs towards her Rally Advanced Excellence (RE) title each time she entered. (She earned her RA and RE titles the same weekend).
        • Earned her barn hunt title her first weekend attempting the endeavor with two high in trials.

We look forward to watching Fen grow up and see her do some fun things in her future.

Good Show Weekend

GCH CoolWater's The Tide Is High - "Jesse"

Jesse in the group ring in York, PA .

It was a nice, successful, show weekend in Maryland.

Friday, Jesse (Bronze GCH CoolWaters The Tide Is High), took BOS (Best Opposite Sex – the best dog of the sex opposite to the best of breed winner) to the #1 Chessie in the country.

On Saturday, she had a repeat performance at the National Capital Chesapeake Bay Retriever Club Specialty where there were nearly 30 entries (if I counted right)

And, to round out the weekend, Sunday, she did it again!

We can’t complain about a weekend like that, not one bit.

A Winner

GCH CH CoolWater Oak & Kyle JamesToday I got to see, Oak, a puppy I bred 4 years ago.I haven’t seen this puppy since he left my house as a wee baby. Oak has had some nice success with very limited showing. However, his greatest accomplishment is being a buddy to his owner, Kyle.

Some of you know Kyle, many of you don’t. Kyle is one of the breed old-timers that you don’t hear about any more. Sitting and talking with him for an hour provides more valuable learning opportunities than I can begin to state. As a long time Chessie breeder/fancier, Kyle has seen many dogs come and go. He has had wins and losses, successes in breedings and failures. This provides valuable insight for those of us currently finding our way.

Today, as I watched Oak with Kyle, and as Kyle told me that Oak will be his last “dog”, I was told Oak ended up being everything Kyle could have asked for as his last buddy. If I never produce another “winner,” that is ok. After today, I believe I have already won in more ways than one.

A week of lows and HIGHS

GCH CH Jala's Misty Hill CoolWater Oak - Oak

GCH CH Jala’s Misty Hill CoolWater Oak – Oak

Today I found out “Oak” – GCH Jala’s Misty Hill CoolWater Oak –  owned by Kyle & Coralee James & Stacey Thomson – bred by me out of (CH Misty Hill Nash x CH Silvercreek’s Spiced Rum) took a **Group 2 win** today in Arcadia, FL under judge Kenneth Buxton.

While “Oak” has a few other group placements this Group 2 is a first for us. Needless to say, we are beyond thrilled with Oaks success.

Sometimes it’s for the best.

Chesapeake Bay Retriever Puppy

Sometimes, no matter how hard we try to screen a home, life just happens and a puppy just doesn’t work out for one reason or another.

This is “Bear”, a male Chesapeake Bay Retriever puppy. His name was formally “Willoughby”. When Bear was about 12 -weeks old he was returned to us. He didn’t do anything wrong and there was nothing wrong with him. His new owners just were not as equipped to handle a young dog, a puppy, as they thought they might be.

Thankfully, I quickly made a phone call to a seasoned Chessie home and they welcomed the puppy into their home with open arms.

Bear is currently 7 months old and is doing some field training as he will be hunted over later this year. His owner reports he’s doing doubles and is casting in any direction and he told me today, that he cannot stress how impressed he is with how easy he learns.

My point is not that he’s a fabulous puppy (although I do think he’s pretty cute) but that sometimes when a home doesn’t work out it’s for the best

Pedigree

Marvel is co-owned with Connie Cotton and he resides with her in Alabama. He is very special to us as he’s from our boy Risk, the only offspring from our girl Jessie.

Marvel is just a baby but we’ll be sure to post updates on him in the future as he matures. We have lots of exciting plans for this beautiful boy.

Great Hunt: South Carolina – “Cali”

Jala's Misty Hill Coolwater Cali - "Cali"

Jala’s Misty Hill Coolwater Cali – “Cali”
(Morgan x Nash)

I love getting photos of the dogs. Today, I touched base with one of the pup owners (which I often do) and I received this great note and photo.

“Had a big day….. Opener for ducks and dove. She strolled through two limit of ducks this am and an afternoon limit of dove.”

Funny, some people think a show dog can’t hunt or that a hunting dog can’t show. We strive for good lookin’ dogs that can, hopefully, do both. Cali is from a litter that currently has 3 AKC Champions (and one more to be titled in 2013).
