Height: 24″ | Weight: 85 lbs | Color: Dark Red-Brown | Coat: Short, thick, very course
Patton.72Patton lives in Massachusetts with his owner, Todd.

Patton is a nice-looking boy with a wonderful easy-going temperament. He gets along well with other dogs, both male and female. Patton has many nice things about him, a beautiful topline, gorgeous coat, good substance, and short in loin. One of his strengths, however, is his strong movement which helped him garner his AKC Conformation title rather quickly.

Here are some of Patton’s successes:

  • Finished his Championship in 5 weekends, with 3 majors, at just under 10 months of age.
  • First weekend out after earning his Championship took Best of Breed over specials at just under a year of age.
  • At 15 months of age, he made the first cut for Best of Breed at the 2014 ACC National Show Specialty.
  • At 25 months of age, he was awarded a Group 4 placement at an AKC all-breed show.
  • At 27 months of age, he was awarded a Group 3 placement at an AKC all-breed show.
  • 2017 Westminister Kennel Club Award of Merit.
  • Currently has 3 of 4 passes for his HRC title

CoolWater's Fly Me To The Moon - Gabby

SHR CoolWater’s Fly Me To The Moon – Gabby

Gabby is 23″, 72 lbs. and dark sedge. Her coat is very course, very short and thick.

She resides in Mississippi and is co-owned with Kevin & Pam Goodrum and Connie Colvin of Alabama. She is primarily a hunting companion.

Gabby is highly intelligent and very active. She is proving herself to be easily trainable and she picks up on concepts well. She is a fast and stylish retriever with good marking ability. Gabby earned her UKC  Started Hunting Retriever title (SHR) by going 4 for 4.

Temperament wise Gabby is very friendly and social.

Conformation wise, Gabby has many nice attributes – beautiful head with little ears/nice ear set, nice topline, great depth of chest and an underline which many Chesapeakes lack. Gabby has shown limitedly in AKC shows. She currently has 10 points (including a major).

She will periodically continue running hunt tests and showing to finalize her championship and we will update the website with her progress.

Sometimes it’s for the best.

Chesapeake Bay Retriever Puppy

Sometimes, no matter how hard we try to screen a home, life just happens and a puppy just doesn’t work out for one reason or another.

This is “Bear”, a male Chesapeake Bay Retriever puppy. His name was formally “Willoughby”. When Bear was about 12 -weeks old he was returned to us. He didn’t do anything wrong and there was nothing wrong with him. His new owners just were not as equipped to handle a young dog, a puppy, as they thought they might be.

Thankfully, I quickly made a phone call to a seasoned Chessie home and they welcomed the puppy into their home with open arms.

Bear is currently 7 months old and is doing some field training as he will be hunted over later this year. His owner reports he’s doing doubles and is casting in any direction and he told me today, that he cannot stress how impressed he is with how easy he learns.

My point is not that he’s a fabulous puppy (although I do think he’s pretty cute) but that sometimes when a home doesn’t work out it’s for the best
.

Show Report: Florida

I failed to report that Rip received his second major by taking his second Best of Breed win over multiple Specials on Saturday, July 14 under Dr. Robert Indeglia.

This gives Rip – CoolWater’s RipTide- 11 points. Not too shabby for only three weekends of showing. We only need 4 singles now for his Championship.

Feeding Schedule

Chesapeake puppies tummies can be sensitive to food changes so we suggest you keep your pup on the same food. If you decide to change his/her food it needs to be done very gradually.

Set a feeding schedule…

We highly suggest setting a feeding schedule for your puppy — and keeping to it — which will aide in housebreaking.Your Chessie puppy has been eating three times a day at approximately 6:30 a.m. (breakfast), 12:00 p.m. (lunch), and 6:00 p.m. (dinner).  This schedule is not cast in stone and can fluctuate slightly.  However, we recommend the final feeding be no later that 7:00 p.m.  This will allow enough time for the puppy to go outside a few times before bedtime.

Your puppy’s breakfast should be given after he/she has gone potty outside and had a little play session.  Lunch should be given approximately halfway between the breakfast and dinner feedings. At first,  give your puppy about 3/4 cup of food.  Let the pup have access to the food for about 15 minutes.  If there is any food left in the bowl after 15 minutes, then pick up what hasn’t been eaten. Do not give him/her more food until the next feeding time. At that time, give the puppy its normal allotted food amount.  Continue this through his/her scheduled feedings

As Chessie puppies grow, so do their appetites.  If your puppy consistently finishes all of the food offered, and he/she isn’t overweight, then you can increase the amount foodd, 1/4 cup at a time.  Many Chessie puppies eat a lot, and will act famished even if they aren’t.  Be careful not to overfeed.  It is important that your puppy not become overweight.  You should be able to feel the ribs quite readily when your pup is standing.

We do NOT recommend free feeding your Chessie.

Three feedings to two …

By six months of age, we recommend a twice a day feeding schedule. At this time take the same amount of food you have been feeding in a day and divide it into two feedings.  At one year you may switch to feeding once a day.

Switching foods …

Typically, adult female Chessies eat between 1 and 3 cups per day, while males eat between 3 and 5 cups per day.  Food consumption varies from dog to dog based on individual metabolism and activity level. It is not recommended to feed the amount on the packaging – instead, feed according to your dogs needs. If your dog looks a little plump, then cut him/her back 1/4 cup. If your pup looks thin, then increase his/her food.

If you feel you need to switch foods. Please do so gradually to help avoid stomach upset. Below is a general guideline on how to switch foods:

Day 1 & 2: feed 3/4 old food and 1/4 new food (mixed together)
Day 3 & 4: feed 1/2 old food and 1/2 new food (mixed together)
Day 5 & 6: feed 3/4 new food and 1/4 old food (mixed together)
Day 7: feed 100% new food
